Actively supporting the Government of Bihar’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts by covering the hard- to-reach, marginalized and hesitant populations.

At the onset of the pandemic, the state of Bihar had one of the lowest vaccination coverage. While the Government of Bihar deployed successful initiatives that rapidly increased the vaccination uptake, a densely populated state with diverse socio-demographics and difficult geographical layout posed it’s own set of challenges with covering those at the last mile.

We assigned the RECOVER team most challenging villages with lowest vaccination coverage and high refusal. I was happy to witness that many refusals were converted. The strategies and modus operandi of this project are effective, and should yield positive results if adopted by our teams for other areas.

Earlier, I had to go with the verifier on a bike or take public transport carrying the heavy equipment to far-away villages. But, the RECOVER team provided us with a vehicle to reach difficult geographies comfortably and safely. This made us efficient and our jobs much easier.

There was no RI or COVID vaccination camp in our village before. To get vaccinated, we had to walk 3 kms and cross a hill to reach a nearby village. It used to be very difficult, especially for pregnant and old people to make it. Today, for the first time, many of our villagers are getting COVID vaccination in their own village.

After the 1st dose, I collapsed due to blood pressure and was hospitalized. When the team came to us for the 2nd dose, I was too scared. We were informed that the vaccine is not harmful and that I should visit a doctor to clarify my concerns. With the doctor's counseling and the team's reassurance, I took the 2nd dose at my house. There were no side-effects. Now, I encourage others to get fully vaccinated.

I am 5 months pregnant and was very afraid that vaccine would harm my child. But, VMC bhaiya (recruited community mobilizers) spoke with my husband and mother-in-law and addressed their concerns. When they explained to me it was safe, then I felt reassured to take the vaccination.
